formatlabor develops and tests new forms of the uses of media and communication and reflects their possible social effects.

different media and unmediated formats will be used during the evening: fragments and films, such as der rhein - ein deutsches märchen [the rhein - a german fairy tale] (2 min., 1983) and e.k.g. expositus - the artistic and the public media (101 min., 2003) will be shown, as well as an interview and public discussion with the video artist.

'i understand experimental film as self reflection; formally as metafilm [film about film], and content-wise as personal film. i understand film as personal commitment, with the required self-irony. in my work, i always start from my personal, definable, direct and immediate environment, and arrive at universal sometimes very abstract subjects, themes and topics.' der rhein - ein deutsches märchen [the rhein - a german fairy tale]

where i come from, you stay at home. you either go on holiday or go to war.

the images are materials that were not originally intended for this film. they were first placed in their new relationship during the 'heimat' project. the starting points were photos and standard-8 films from the 'family collection', as well as super-8 war films from the flea market and some shots i took incidentally during a german-french super-8 workshop to test a camera.

e.k.g. expositus poses ethical questions concerning the image. it's about the authenticity of images: truth/falsehood, and about the privacy of images: soul-stealing. and it's always about the expectant positionings of the spectator.

'immanuel kant hospital in neukölln, berlin. midnight. a patient is being admitted. tv journalists are on the spot. the beginning of a story that tells itself. a dramatic narrative is suggested at the beginning of the film. during the course of the film, it develops into a reflection of storytelling itself. the making of films and images itslf comes into question. the engagement with images is highlighted, visualised and documented on various internal narrative levels, from the conception and shooting [of the film production] to the tv reportage on this very film, which the spectator sees in the present and in the original format, live at the cinema. - ekg researches the sustainability [and the evanescence] of expectations in film and television. ekg is a narrative experiment and an experimental narrative.'
